Tech Tip: IDEA V9 for the Virtual World

The words “virtual machine” are becoming more and more commonplace, along with the question, “Can IDEA be installed into a virtual environment?” The answer to that is, “It depends.”

It all depends on how your virtual world is set up and on the type of IDEA license you have. Here are a couple of models to help guide you if you’re installing IDEA into a virtual environment.

IDEA LICENSES THAT CAN BE INSTALLED IN A VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT

These IDEA license styles are suitable for virtual environments:

  •  Corporate User License
  •  Concurrent Electronic License
  •  USB-keyed License (Single User or Network Dongle)

VIRTUALIZED SERVER HOSTING CITRIX OR TERMINAL SERVER

  •  Install the license key controller (SLM or CLM) on to the Virtual Server.
  •  Install the IDEA desktop application on to User’s physical or virtual PC. Use the IP address to point the application to the license key controller.
  •  When the user creates IDEA files, they will automatically be stored on the User’s C: drive unless the user points the IDEA project to a different location on the network.

VIRTUALIZED MACHINE ONLY

  •  Install the license key controller (SLM or CLM) onto the Virtual Server.
  •  Install the IDEA desktop application onto the Citrix or Terminal Server. Use the IP address to point the application to the license key controller.
  •  When the user creates IDEA files, they will automatically be stored on the User’s C: drive unless the user points the IDEA project to a different location on the network.

USB-KEYED LICENSES (DONGLES)

USB-keyed licenses that use hardware dongles install the same way as electronic keys with one exception: the USB port used by the dongle must be “visible” to all of the devices in the virtual environment. This can be accomplished several ways. Please contact our help desk if you are considering this type of installation.
