University of Virginia Joins IDEA® Academic Partnership

HOUSTON – April 3, 2017 – University of Virginia graduate students in the McIntire School of Commerce are learning to apply data analytics techniques to extract meaningful insights and identify potential risks by participating in the IDEA Academic Partnership.

Students in the McIntire School of Commerce have direct access to data analytics software, data sets for real-world case studies and other resources, provided to the University at no cost by the IDEA Academic Partnership. The donation, valued at approximately $80,000, gives University of Virginia students a better understanding of the various sources and types of data they are analyzing. More importantly, students learn how to obtain and analyze data in a way that allows them to make informed decisions. These skills are highly sought after by potential employers, and offer the potential to advance in their careers.

Assistant Professor of Commerce, Eric Negangard, Ph.D., CPA, CFE, shares his professional experience with students to build their experience and confidence in using analytics to prepare them for the data-driven world of business. Dr. Negangard used IDEA daily in his previous role as a manager with KPMG’s Forensic practice. He chose to incorporate IDEA into his curriculum because he found it easier to learn and use when compared to other available software solutions.

“Students who are a year out of school have told me that their IDEA experience and resultant data analytic skills make them superstars on their engagement teams,” said Dr. Negangard. “I am a true believer that data analysis skills are the number one determinate of a successful accountant. The Partnership offers students a tremendous opportunity to learn the software while working with real-world accounting data and makes them very valuable employees.”

“Many of the top professional organizations are urging professionals to use purpose-built data analytics tools for audit engagements,” said Cory Windham, Academic Partnership Coordinator. “We are getting more interest from well-known institutions like the University of Virginia that want to prepare students for this demand. When they can list experience using data analytics on their résumés, it differentiates them from other job candidates, and often means they will advance quicker.”
