2020 CaseWare IDEA® User of Excellence Award Winner Selected

Matt Storlie with Wipfli Honored for Advancing the Use of Data Analytics

HOUSTON – July 22, 2020 – Audimation Services, Inc., has selected Matt Storlie, CFE, CIDA with Wipfli LLP (Wipfli) as the recipient of the 2020 U.S. IDEA User of Excellence Award. He is being recognized for his longstanding use of data analytics to build anti-fraud, risk-based models and discovering new ways to analyze data in industries and practices the firm had not previously pursued.

The Award recognizes influencers and innovators using CaseWare IDEA® to make a meaningful impact in their organization from improving audits to identify risks and preventing fraud. Wipfli is a top 20 national accounting and consulting firm focused on helping its clients streamline processes, improve performance, leverage the right technology, and accelerate financial growth.

Storlie is a Manager in the Forensic and Litigation Services team and is the designated data analytics subject matter expert and advocate for Wipfli’s nearly 2,500 associates. He has used CaseWare IDEA® for more than 15 years as the engine for cleansing and correlating financial data to help both internal and external clients identify high-risk areas and detect and deter fraud.

Dru Carney, also a member of Wipfli’s Forensic and Litigation Services team, submitted the nomination and acknowledged Storlie’s dedication to sharing his expertise with colleagues, local chapter members, and graduate students at his alma mater, Iowa State University.

“With his extensive knowledge of IDEA along with his deep experience in data analytics, Matt is an invaluable resource not only to our Forensic and Litigation team, but for our entire organization,” said Marc Courey, CPA/CFF, JD, LLM, CFE, CICA, CCEP, CIA, Director – Forensic & Litigation Services, Wipfli.

“Technology has always fascinated me, especially its utilization as a way to identify and combat fraud,” said Storlie. “While I’ve used a variety of data analytics tools over the years, IDEA has become my tool of choice for its ease of use, robust power, and built-in functionality. I’m able to pull in and correlate data from multiple sources to perform testing and analysis across multiple files, which is where we find things that would be impossible to identify any other way. There are so many ways IDEA can integrate into your work – the possibilities are truly endless, which drives me to find new areas it can be used and share those with others. I am truly humbled and honored to receive this IDEA award.”

“Matt Storlie is the perfect example of a someone who understands the value data analytics adds to empower both clients and colleagues, wherever they are located,” said Carolyn Newman, President, Audimation Services. “His technical expertise in automating testing and pushing the limits of utilizing analytics to prevent fraud are unrivaled. We are delighted to present this accolade to Matt in recognition of his long-time use of IDEA, and commitment to sharing his knowledge to advance the profession at every level.”

Storlie is currently developing a suite of applications in IDEA for both Wipfli and internal audit shops to streamline and standardize financial statement testing. These interactive scripts will help field auditors perform risk-based testing, conduct more proactive anti-fraud work, and deliver positive, lasting results.

Before joining Wipfli, Storlie worked in various fraud and forensic, data analytic and internal audit roles with Prime Therapeutics, University of Minnesota Physicians, PWC and Baker Tilly. He earned a BBA in Accounting from Iowa State University – College of Business, where he has served on the Accounting Executive Advisory Council since 2010. Storlie is a frequent speaker at conferences, including the IDEA User Conference and was a past president of the Twin Cities Chapter of Certified Fraud Examiners.

Honorable Mentions
Audimation is proud to recognize three additional candidates that were strong contenders for this year’s award:

Rachel Organist, with Workman Forensics, is using IDEA to assist clients in acquiring, analyzing, and automating complex data. She shares the new functions, scripts, and information with colleagues to benefit from improved processes.

Chris Kosty, CPA, with Schneider Downs, was nominated for developing a library of more than 30 automated audit procedures that have been implemented on nearly all audits throughout the past two busy seasons. For the past five years, Kosty has served as an IDEA Champion, where he assists in the development of live annual trainings and will be presenting a session on IDEAScripting at the 2020 IDEA Virtual User Conference.

Keith Heinen, with Stifel Financial Corporation, was recognized for using IDEA to streamline a regulatory issue around the organization’s enterprise badging system to perform a complete user access review of 500,000 physical security points. In a short amount of time, he redefined a procedure that once took months into an automated process that is monitored daily. His promotion of IDEA within Operations has helped internal audit drive buy-in of its use in other areas of the enterprise.
