Erin Baker with the University of Texas System Receives IDEA User of Excellence Award

HOUSTON – May 16, 2016 – CaseWare Analytics and Audimation Services, Inc. have selected Erin Baker, Data Analytics Program Manager with the University of Texas (UT) System internal audit team as the recipient of the 2016 U.S. IDEA® User of Excellence Award. She is being recognized for effectively using CaseWare IDEA to help address data acquisition challenges, and provide training and share information across the entire organization.

The UT System is one of the nation’s largest higher education organizations with 14 academic, health and system administration institutions. In 2014, the Chief Audit Executive spearheaded a three-year strategic plan to integrate data analytics across the organization. Baker, a data analytics specialist with an internal audit background, was instrumental in applying IDEA to streamline the data acquisition process across multiple entities and environments throughout the UT System. She also developed a number of IDEAScripts to simplify and standardize analysis.

“When we set out to incorporate the use of data analytics within the System, it was important to have the right tools and training in place to achieve that goal,” said Baker. “As we rolled out the initiative, the function of internal auditor evolved into one of a trusted advisor providing creative, valuable solutions. Our enterprise-wide use of IDEA has benefited both the internal auditors using it to improve the quality of their work, and the auditees who gain more meaningful insights from the data.”

As the Data Analytics Program Manager with the UT System Audit Office, Baker provides data analytics training and support to the 14 internal audit departments throughout the System. Baker was selected to receive the IDEA User of Excellence Award for her ingenuity in using IDEA to build user-friendly, menu-driven tools to help the internal auditors acquire data based on their specific environment, analyze data in key financial areas, extract and index outliers for further investigation and review the results. One of the tools Baker has developed, the Financial Activity Tool, provides basic summaries of activities related to multiple financial processes and can be used for multiple purposes, including risk assessment development and change management for departmental audits. Baker has also developed a Procard Tool and a Travel & Entertainment Tool, both of which can be used across multiple institutions.
