University at Buffalo - School of Management Receives CaseWare IDEA Donation

HOUSTON – April 4, 2016 – The University at Buffalo School of Management has accepted an in-kind software donation from the IDEA Academic Partnership to help teach more than 320 students techniques for using data analytics to identify internal control weaknesses and anomalies within data, and improve business processes, such as profitability.

The donation of 60 concurrent electronic licenses of IDEA Version 10 is valued at $172,750. IDEA will be included in courses including Accounting Information Systems, Cost Accounting, Data Analytics for Accountants, and Advanced Topics in Management Accounting.

“By expanding our IDEA licenses, more students will be able to analyze real business problems through interpretation of data,” said Lorrie Metzger, clinical assistant professor, Department of Accounting and Law, UB School of Management. “IDEA is extremely easy for students to learn and use, and the IDEA Workbook is a nice complement for guidance in navigating the software’s features. The support we’ve received is greatly appreciated.”

The donation provides students with hands-on experience using data analytics to hone their critical thinking skills. Using the IDEA Workbook, which includes case studies and data sets, students learn how to import data, perform various audit tests, extract and join data sets, and write scripts to automate repeatable processes.

“Every university teaching data analytics helps strengthen the accounting and auditing profession,” said Cory Windham, IDEA Academic Partnership coordinator. “There are more than 470 universities using IDEA, and we have found that students appreciate being able to work with the same software used by top accounting firms and internal audit departments. The experience they gain gives them a competitive edge when they enter the workforce.”

IDEA is a powerful and user-friendly tool designed to help accounting and financial professionals extend their auditing capabilities, detect fraud and meet documentation standards. It allows users to quickly import, join, analyze, sample and extract data from almost any source, including reports printed to a file, such as PDFs. With unlimited file size capabilities and an intuitive user interface, IDEA has the ability to analyze large volumes of data in seconds. IDEA is used in more than 90 countries, by major accounting firms, government, corporations in all industry sectors and by more than 470 universities as a teaching tool.
