West Virginia University Adds CaseWare IDEA® into AIS Courses
 

Houston - July 25, 2013 - West Virginia University, an active member of the IDEA Academic Partnership, has received a site license of CaseWare IDEA® to incorporate professional-grade data analytics into its Accounting Information Systems (AIS) courses. The in-kind software donation, valued at $77,700, will accommodate approximately 175 graduate and undergraduate students throughout the year. Additionally, the university will receive $19,400 in in-kind support and maintenance for the second year of use.
 

IDEA has been used extensively in the University’s forensics courses including the Forensic Accounting and Fraud Examination (FAFE) course, and by those pursuing masters’ degrees in accounting. When the faculty decided to change the curricula of the AIS course from writing to focus on using technology for data analytics, IDEA was implemented to give students real-world experience.
 

“The skills our students gain from using IDEA are fully transferable,” said Richard Dull, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Accounting, West Virginia University. “It moves them from a theoretical concept to reality. We try to help them make that connection by showing them not just why, but how and how it all works together. This is a tool they will use the rest of their career and help them advance faster.”
 

Students enrolled in AIS and FAFE courses will also learn how to extract data from a live ERP system, which is a skill required for most audit engagements.
 

“IDEA is a good tool to help the students understand the process of forensic data discovery and analysis,” said Christian Schaupp, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Accounting at West Virginia University. “It helps them easily identify patterns and anomalies within a dataset. West Virginia University began teaching data analytics techniques using the IDEA Workbook, and has expanded its use by installing it in the lab.”
