The Field Statistics Primer

Quick Reference Guide for Working with Numeric/Date/Time Field Stats


Although “Pop Kurtosis” sounds like it could be a music genre from the ’60’s, in IDEA it is one of the many statistics automatically calculated on your population in IDEA’s Field Statistics. Each of the IDEA field statistics is described in the IDEA help feature; but we’ve captured that information in these easy to reference tables for you.

Numeric StatisticDescription
Net ValueTotal of the positive values minus the negative values in the field.
Absolute ValueTotal of the absolute of the values in the field.
# of RecordsTotal number of records in the database.
# of Zero ItemsNumber of records with a zero value in the field.
Positive ValueTotal of debit (positive) values in the field.
Negative ValueTotal of credit (negative) values in the field.
# of Positive RecordsNumber of records with debit (positive) values in the field.
# of Negative RecordsNumber of records with credit (negative) values in the field.
# of Data ErrorsNumber of records with errors in the field.
# of Valid ValuesTotal number of records minus the number of records with errors in the field.
Average ValueAverage of values, such as net value/number of records, in the field.
Minimum ValueLowest value in the field.
Maximum ValueHighest value in the field.
Record # of MinRecord number of the record that contains the minimum value in the field. If more than one record contains the minimum value, the record number of the first record that contains the minimum value in the field will be displayed.
Record # of MaxRecord number of the record that contains the maximum value in the field. If more than one record contains the maximum value, the record number of the first record that contains the maximum value in the field will be displayed.
Sample Std DevA numeric value that represents the distribution of data in a selected sample.
Sample VarianceA numeric value that indicates the dispersion of data around its mean value in a selected sample.
Pop Std DevA numeric value that represents the distribution of the data.
Pop VarianceA numeric value that indicates the dispersion of data around its mean value.
Pop SkewnessA numeric value that indicates the asymmetry of the data.
Pop KurtosisA numeric value that indicates the shape of the distribution of data values.

 

Date StatisticDescription
# of Valid ValuesTotal number of records minus the sum of number of records with errors in the field and number of records with zero values.
# of Zero ItemsNumber of records with a zero value in the field.
# of RecordsTotal number of records in the database.
# of Data ErrorsNumber of records with errors in the field.
Earliest DateEarliest date in the field. useful for testing cut-off dates.
Latest DateLatest date in the field. useful for testing cut-off dates.
Record # of EarliestRecord number of the record that contains the earliest date in the field. If more than one record contains the earliest date, the record number of the first record that contains the earliest date in the field will be displayed.
Record # of LatestRecord number of the record that contains the latest date in the field. If more than one record contains the latest date, the record number of the first record that contains the latest date in the field will be displayed.
Most Common DayThe day of the week that most frequently appears in the date values in the field.
Most Common MonthThe month that most frequently appears in the date values in the field.
Items in MonthNumber of records with values that contain the particular month.
Items on DayNumber of records with values that contain the particular day of the week.

 

Time StatisticDescription
# of RecordsTotal number of records in the database.
# of Valid ValuesTotal number of records minus the sum of number of records with errors in the field and number of records with zero values.
# of Data ErrorsNumber of records with errors in the field.
# of Zero ItemsNumber of records with a zero value in the field.
Latest TimeLatest time value in the field.
Earliest TimeEarliest time value in the field.
Most Common HourThe hour that most frequently appears in the time values in the field.
Most Common MinuteThe minute that most frequently appears in the time values in the field.
Most Common SecondThe second that most frequently appears in the time values in the field.
# of Records in AMThe number of records in the field that have a time value that falls before 12 noon.
# of Records in PMThe number of records in the field that have a time value that falls after 12 noon.
# of Records Before 6 AMThe number of records with a time value that falls before 06:00 in the morning.
# of Records After 6 PMThe number of records with a time value that falls after 06:00 in the evening.
Average TimeThe average time value for the field.
# of Records Less Than a DayThe number of records in the field that are less than 24 hours in duration.
# of Records More Than a DayThe number of records in the field that are equal to or more than 24 hours in duration.
